Welcome to the English Language Arts page! Below are the resources that our district utilizes for core instruction.
Fundations is a multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program. Fundations is used for core instruction in the whole group setting. It teaches foundational skills and supports reading, writing, and language standards. The following concepts and skills are presented cumulatively from unit to unit and year to year: letter formation, phonological and phonemic awareness, sound mastery, phonics, word study, advance word study, irregular (trick) word instruction, vocabulary, fluency, and written composition (spelling and handwriting). Fundations offers multiple opportunities for skills practice and application to build mastery.
The Fishtank ELA curriculum aims to develop students into critical readers, writers, and thinkers. The resource aims to broaden their perspectives, enabling them to better understand themselves and the world around them. Fishtank ELA is designed around the following guiding principles:
Building knowledge to nurture critical thinking.
Centering diverse, relevant, and rigorous texts.
Prioritizing student voices and ideas to build agency.
Learning to write, writing to learn.
Preparing teachers to support students.
Students in Fifth and Sixth grade explore literature through novel studies and literature circles. This framework allows students to develop their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills through high-quality literature. Students practice and refine their skills related to the grade-level standards.
Schoolwide's Writing Fundamentals Units of Study is used in grades 5 and 6. All of the units use quality literature and informational texts to provide authentic examples of various genres and text types. This resource focuses on providing explicit instruction that demonstrates why writers write and how writers communicate their ideas effectively, utilizing the workshop model.
