Business Processes & Challenges

To ensure we captured the entirety of the road and rail value chain, we identified 8 critical business processes that define the operations of the road and rail industry. For the purposes of this project, we considered all business processes from the design of new transportation infrastructure to infrastructure decommission. We did not consider upstream processes, such as the availability of raw materials.

The 8 critical business processes identified (Figure 1):

3. Operations & emergency response

4. Traffic monitoring and efficiency improvements

5. Commuter/freight service route planning

6. Infrastructure safety & security

7.  Maintenance, upgrades, & expansions
