Our equity growth is not measured by the number of neat-sounding programs and initiatives at our schools, but rather by the extent to which people who previously felt marginalized experience the school more equitably. In order to make this kind of movement, it's important to approach equity at a more fundamental, transformative level. In this session I will discuss a series of principles designed to help schools embrace and enact that transformative approach.
Through my organizations, the Equity Literacy Institute and EdChange, I am a longtime advocate for equity and justice in schools. After a long career as a teacher educator at several universities, I focus now on working directly with schools to strengthen equity commitments, practices, and leadership. I've written several books and dozens of articles, mostly about how to help schools transition from a mitigative approach to equity to a more meaningful, transformative approach. I am a doting father, a gardener, a creative writer, and a lover of animals and nature.Â
