Engage in Productive Struggle: HS Geometry Challenges
Nancy LinIn this workshop, you will be presented with challenging geometry problems. Learn how you can best help students engage in productive struggle and promote student discourse by experiencing it yourself. Notice how you respond, what problem-solving strategies you employ, what questions you ask as you work through the challenges. Engage in thoughtful metacognition! This way you can relate to how students encounter even your everyday Geometry classwork/homework, and you can contemplate the various ways you can support students when they struggle.
Please note: These geometry problems are NOT meant to be included as part of your Regents Geometry course, as they would be too difficult. The purposeful intent of using these problems is for YOU, as a knowledgeable Geometry teacher, to encounter productive struggle.Out of the Box Math
Lisa StonefootThis session will look at some interesting ways for students to practice math skills and demonstrate their understanding of the content using materials that they have at home. They can do these activities with technology or without!
Mathematical Games
Andrew Mitchell, Pamela McHenry & Stefan KowalskiHow can we create engaging learning experiences from a distance? Through math games! Come to this session to play, learn, and use standards-aligned math resources.
Number Talks for 3-5
Tessa Levitt and Jessica Schrrichamer-SmithA Number Talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful ongoing practice with computation and mental math. A Number Talk is a powerful tool for helping students develop computational fluency because the expectation is that they will use number relationships and the structures of numbers to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
