This session will look at some interesting ways for students to practice math skills and demonstrate their understanding of the content using materials that they have at home. They can do these activities with technology or without!

The connections between the new NYSSLS science standards and new Next Generation math learning standards

With many math and science teachers teaching in silos, teachers do not realize how similar the new way of learning science using the 3-dimensional NGSS framework is to how math is taught. This workshop will shed light on the similarities and make connections between math and science.

Using Inquiry to Establish Background Knowledge

Keeping with the shifts in mindset delivered in the NYSSLS, teachers will take away practices for establishing background knowledge with their students without sacrificing the spirit of inquiry. These strategies are used across contents, including Math. These strategies will support student modeling and student discourse. These strategies work to challenge student thinking and are aligned to draw on students' foundational.understandings.

Cross Curricular Choice Boards for the NYSSLS

Finding time for Science can be a challenge in the classroom and in the current online classroom environment. We will share how Choice Boards based in the NYSSLS will provide you with the opportunities to incorporate other content areas into Science all while focusing on your Disciplinary Core Ideas, Cross Cutting Concepts and Science Engineering Practices.

iMap Invasives in Your Backyard

Emily Caboot, Laura Lehtonen

Students will need a phone and an app to collect neighborhood or backyard data on invasive plant populations. We will review the resources on the NYSED and DEC websites to support this short unit and also have a quick overview of the iMap Invasives app in a backyard filled with invasive plants! Come outside with us!
