UNIT 7.1 IDENTIFYING PRESENT PEOPLE
Identifying a Person
To point out a person in the room, you need to describe something that helps the listener locate the person quickly.
Identify person by describing one or two of these:
- body position
- appearance
- clothing
Body Classifiers (BCLs)
Body classifier sign which the body “enacts” the verb of the sentence.
Role shifting is usually required. Specific action is described in italics and quotation marks (i.e., BCL “flap arms”).
Body Part Classifiers (BPCLs)
Body part classifier sign representing a specific part of the body doing the action. Handshape is often indicated and specific action is described in italics and quotation marks (i.e., (2h) BPCL:1 step back.) The (2h) stands for 1 two-handed signs.
Bodypart SASSes ( BPSASSES)
Body part size and shape specifiers used to describe parts of the body mainly on and around the face, i.e.,BYPASS “very short hair”
Describing Size
when describing the relative size of someone’s height, body type or clothing patterns, add the following facial expressions, especially to the mouth, to indicate what is being described is smaller or thinner, or larger or thicker that normal or expected:
