World Theatre Research Presentation
Weighting: SL 30% or HL 20%
OVERVIEW
Students at SL and HL plan, deliver and video record an individual research presentation (15 minutes maximum) in which they evidence their academic and practical explorations of a performance convention from a world theatre tradition they have not previously studied. The world theatre tradition must be chosen from the list given by IB.
STEPS
Choose a theatre tradition from the IB List (see list below).
Research theatre tradition through books, articles and videos. Research sources should be primary and/or secondary sources. Keep a sources list, you will need it for your presentation when you do in-text citations.
Through your research, identify a performance convention of the tradition that you will learn for your presentation. Do your primary and/or secondary research on this performance convention.
A performance convention is a significant and identifiable element of performance (body and/or voice) that is usually culturally recognized, accepted and identified as a key feature of the theatre tradition. Performance conventions have a particular function within a tradition and are a key feature of communication to the audience. Many conventions are unique to their theatre tradition, although some may appear in similar form but with significant variations in other world theatre practices.
Assemble your Section A (A1 & A2)
RECORD SECTION A DRAFT; RECEIVED FEEDBACK; RECORD FINAL OF SECTION A. RECORDINGS MUST BE DONE FORMALLY IN CLASS WITH AUDIENCE. This section should be no more than 5 minutes.
Practical Exploration of Performance Convention:
You will research your chosen performance convention of your world theatre tradition through a series of practical performance explorations, meaning that you will explore the performance convention with your body and voice. *YOU MUST DOCUMENT YOUR ENTIRE PROCESS THROUGH IMAGES, VIDEOS AND JOURNAL WRITING.*
Once you are able to perform your chosen convention, you will continue your exploration through applying the convention in a traditional moment of the world theatre tradition. IN THIS PROCESS, YOU ARE EXPERIMENTING WITH HOW THE CHOSEN CONVENTION MIGHT BE USED IN A TRADITIONAL MOMENT OF THEATRE. IN YOUR PRESENTATION YOU WILL EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DISCOVER AND HOW YOU MADE YOUR DISCOVERIES. *YOU MUST DOCUMENT YOUR ENTIRE PROCESS THROUGH IMAGES, VIDEOS AND JOURNAL WRITING.*
RECORD SECTION B DRAFT; RECEIVE FEEDBACK; RECORD FINAL OF SECTION B. RECORDINGS MUST BE DONE FORMALLY IN CLASS WITH AUDIENCE. This section should be no more than 5 minutes.
Reflection
Each student reflects on how their practical exploration of the performance convention has contributed to their continuing development as a performer.
Each student reflects on the process they have undertaken and considers how their inquiry into the chosen theatre tradition has further developed their understanding of theatre in the world.
RECORD SECTION C DRAFT; RECEIVE FEEDBACK; RECORD FINAL OF SECTION A. RECORDINGS WILL BE DONE ON YOUR OWN. This section should be no more than 5 minutes.
