What was the behind-the-scenes process for this featured music? How did you create it?
Although I compose my classical pieces and pop songs in 2 very different ways, there’s one thing in common--I use my heart and ear to feel and sense the pitches and rhythms, because sometimes the pitches will tell me where they want to go and the story in my heart will create the melody for me. I use staff paper, pencils, a ruler, Sibelius and my piano to compose my classical pieces. I often spend 10+ hours alone in my bedroom, sitting in front of the staff paper and my computer, hearing these hidden melodies outside my window and thinking about the stories I want to tell.
For pop songs, I use Logic Pro X and my small bedroom studio. I always write lyrics before I start to work on the music, which is the exact opposite from my process of composing classical pieces. I don’t plan too much for my pop songs. I just open Logic, choose the instrumentation I feel connected to, and let my hands move themselves on the midi keyboard.
How long have you been writing music and what instruments do you play?
The first time I held a pencil and wrote down my first note was 2014. Since then, I started to study composition as my major when I was at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in Shanghai, China. Now, I am a student in the Juilliard Pre-college program. I started to play piano when I was 3, studied some basic violin and percussion to improve my composition skills, and now I am trying to self-study the guitar.
What was the last song you heard that you wished you'd written?
It’s actually not a song, it is《繁华尽落的青春》, a new musical written by composer Guang Zhao. I went to the rehearsals of this musical and it planted a seed in my heart. One day, I wish that a musical I wrote can also be rehearsed by professionals and premiere on the stage!
Who are three (or four!) artists you recommend for everyone to listen to?
Sergei Rachmaninoff, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, BTS, and Jay Zhou
