Debate I: Public Speaking

Prerequisite: Commitment to contest participation Credit: 1

Debate I: Public Speaking is a course designed to promote research, analysis, and public speaking skills in an educational environment of competition. Students learn and review basic and advanced oral communication skills in the classroom and will be given the opportunity to apply those skills at interscholastic speech and debate tournaments. This class will be similar to Debate I: Argumentation except it will focus on individual speaking events instead of head-to-head debate formats. Students will gain a complete understanding of Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, and Congressional Debate. Attending at least 1 weekend competition per semester is a requirement of this course. Students are encouraged to attend as many scheduled tournaments as possible. The course is highly rigorous and accelerated. Students must maintain UIL eligibility to compete.
