401010 World Geography

Prerequisite: None 1 Credit

World geography is a two-semester course taught at the freshmen level. It provides students the opportunity to study the interaction of people, their cultures and their physical environments. Major regions of the world are studied from a past, present and future perspective. Students will undertake regional analysis of Latin America, the former Soviet Union, Asia and the Middle East. Current events and issues are strongly emphasized. Required for the Recommended High School and Distinguished Achievement Programs.


401120 PAP World Area Studies

Prerequisite: PAP 8th grade social studies is highly recommended Credit: 1

PreAP World Area Studies prepares students for either AP World History or AP Human Geography with a curriculum specifically built around combining world geography and world history content. It also continues to build reading and writing skills necessary for college level work that are essential in Advanced Placement classes. This course is recommended for students who intend to take AP social studies classes in high school, but still need some preparation the freshman year. Those who take Pre-AP World Area Studies will be prepared to be successful in either AP Human Geography or AP World History as sophomores.


401030 AP Human Geography

The purpose of the AP Human Geography is to attain college credit in Human Geography. The content of the course is presented thematically and covers cultural, political, economic and environmental topics. The course has an emphasis on geographic vocabulary , spatial concepts and landscape analysis. Skills in analysis and synthesis are developed as part of the course in preparation for the free response portion of the AP test. Those students considering the Academy of Business and Entrepreneurship or the Academy of Humanities and Social Science will find this course applicable to their other studies. AP Human Geography shares many Academy connections to the Principles of Business, AP Environmental Science and World History courses. Students taking AP Human Geography as freshmen will be learning content and skills that would prepare them for AP World History as sophomores.

This course is the study of the historical development of mankind from ancient civiliza on to the 20th century. Each unit includes general characteristics of a me period and a detailed analysis of one or two sample cultures and mapping of associated geographical features.

The purpose of the AP World History course is to develop greater understanding of the evolution of global processes and contacts, in interaction with different types of human societies. This understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills. The course highlights the nature of changes in international frameworks and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies. The course emphasizes relevant factual knowledge deployed in conjunction with leading interpretive issues and types of historical evidence. The course builds on an understanding of cultural, institutional, and technological precedents that, along with geography, set the human stage. Periodization, explicitly discussed, forms an organizing principle for dealing with change and continuity throughout the course. Specific themes provide further organization to the course, along with the consistent attention to contacts among societies that form the core of world history as a field of study.
