Floral Design is a yearlong course that is designed to prepare students to be successful in the floral industry. This course introduces students to fundamentals of floral design, including categorizing the different shapes and uses of flowers, learning to identify flowers and plants, and recognizing and evaluating principles of art as applied to floral design and technique. Students will also learn successful business practices of the hospitality industry as applied to a retail floral business, such as sales, merchandising and advertising. This course will count as a Fine Arts credit.
In order to maximize the learning opportunities of this class, a $35 lab fee is required to cover the cost of fresh floral materials, plant materials and additional supplies. Students will create and be able to take home seasonal flower arrangements throughout the school year, which may include projects such as a small table centerpiece, a holiday design, a flower crown, a corsage or boutonniere, etc.
Advanced Floral Design
Prerequisite: Floral Design
Advanced Floral Design is a yearlong course designed to build on the foundation of knowledge established in the Floral Design course. In this class, the students will be introduced to more advanced floral design concepts with an emphasis on specialty designs, special occasion planning and key components of the hospitality industry.
This course will focus on providing students with enhanced experiences to enrich their skills in advanced floral design, their knowledge of design elements and planning techniques used in the hospitality industry and with special events. This course will also have an emphasis on budgeting and entrepreneurship to equip students with the critical skills necessary for success in the floral industry.
In order to maximize the learning opportunities of this class, a $35 lab fee is required to cover the cost of fresh floral materials, plant materials and additional supplies.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to test for the Texas State Floral Association Certification (Level I), which is the professional certificate of competency in the floral industry (additional testing fee required).
Prerequisite: This class is open to Juniors and Seniors
Principles of Hospitality is the third course within the Hospitality Academy with an emphasis on managing, marketing, operations of restaurants and other food/ beverage services, special event planning, lodging and attractions, recreation events and travel related services.
This course is designed to introduce students to a broad, customer service focused industry. Students will gain knowledge and skills focusing on communications, time management, and customer service that meet industry standards. Students learn about professional standards and employability skills and research, analyze and explore lifestyle and career goals. Students will also demonstrate verbal and non-verbal communication skills to provide positive customer service as well as demonstrating an understanding of time management, decision making and prioritization within a business framework.
