702215 Principles of Floral Design
Prerequisite: none
Principles of Floral Design is a yearlong course that is designed to prepare students to be successful in the floral industry. This course introduces students to fundamentals of floral design, including categorizing the different shapes and uses of flowers, learning to identify flowers and plants, and recognizing and evaluating principles of art as applied to floral design and technique. Students will also learn successful business practices of the hospitality industry as applied to a retail floral business, such as sales, merchandising and advertising. This course will count as a Fine Arts credit.
In order to maximize the learning opportunities of this class, a $25 lab fee is required to cover the cost of fresh floral materials, plant materials and additional supplies. Students will create and be able to take home seasonal flower arrangements throughout the school year, which may include projects such as a small table centerpiece, a holiday design, a flower crown, a corsage or boutonniere, etc.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to test for the Texas State Floral Association Certification (Level I), which is the professional certificate of competency in the floral industry (additional testing fee required).
