DSBN'S OFF THE WALL ART SHOWCASE 2024

The DSBN recently hosted its annual Off The Wall Art showcase, celebrating creativity and expression among its talented student body. Among the many remarkable pieces on display, one stood out: Mylo Gerbrandt's captivating interpretation of Henry Wallis' iconic painting.
Mylo Gerbrandt's reimagination of Wallis' masterpiece paid homage to the original work and infused it with a modern storytelling twist. By skillfully repainting the piece, Gerbrandt transported viewers into a contemporary narrative, inviting them to explore the intersection of tradition and innovation in art.
The winning piece by Gerbrandt exemplifies the essence of storytelling through art, capturing the imagination and emotions of the audience. Through their work, Gerbrandt demonstrated a profound understanding of visual storytelling, effectively communicating a narrative that resonated with viewers.
But Gerbrandt was not the only star of the showcase. The event also celebrated the talent and creativity of several other Secord students whose artworks left a lasting impression on attendees. Lizzie Malcolm, Lyra Bousfield, Darlene Beare, Erica Elstone, Zoe Tara-Blair, Cecilia Tatarnic, Yazzy Hamza, and Eve Dueck showcased incredible pieces showcasing their unique perspectives and artistic skills.
Each artist brought something unique to the table, whether it was through striking visual compositions, thought-provoking themes, or innovative techniques. From abstract expressionism to realism, the diversity of styles and subjects on display highlighted the richness of artistic talent within the DSBN community.

Secord High School is gearing up to dazzle audiences in a special showcase event. Set to take place on April 25, this evening promises to be a harmonious blend of talent, passion, and a shared commitment to support the arts.
With tickets priced at a modest $7 at the door, attendees will be treated to an unforgettable performance featuring an array of student combos performing beloved jazz standards alongside captivating sets by the Secord Jazz Band and Jazz Choirs. From classic tunes that have stood the test of time to contemporary interpretations that push the boundaries of the genre, there's something for every music lover to enjoy.
The showcase, slated to run for approximately an hour, will include a brief intermission, providing a perfect opportunity for concert-goers to mingle, enjoy refreshments, and participate in a thrilling 50/50 draw. It's not just a night of music; it's a chance for the community to come together in support of young talent and the pursuit of artistic excellence.
But this event is about more than just entertainment; it's also about giving back. Proceeds from ticket sales and the 50/50 draw will go towards supporting this year's MusicFest Nationals—an esteemed competition that celebrates the finest young musicians from across the country. The echoes of raw talent reverberated through the walls of Warehouse last night, as the Second Battle of the Bands unfolded in an explosion of musical prowess and electrifying performances. The event, organized by the dedicated members of the Student Council, proved to be an unparalleled success, drawing in a diverse and enthusiastic crowd eager to witness the magic of live music.
Four exceptional bands took to the stage, each delivering a performance that transcended expectations and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all present. Munoz, Merpaw, and Wilson started the night with their infectious energy and dynamic stage presence, setting the bar high for the evening ahead. Teacups followed suit, captivating the audience with their unique blend of melodies and infectious rhythms.
Next up was Moral, whose harmonious melodies and soulful lyrics struck a chord with every listener. Their performance was a testament to the power of collaboration and musical synergy, leaving the crowd in awe of their unique performance style
However, it was the Neo-Freudian Hydrophobic Loan Sharks who ultimately stole the show with their electrifying performance. Their raw energy and undeniable charisma ignited the crowd, transforming Warehouse into a sea of swaying bodies and thunderous applause. With their mesmerizing blend of genres and unmistakable stage presence, the NFHLS proved themselves worthy champions of the night.
But the journey doesn't end here for the Neo-Freudian Hydrophobic Loan Sharks. Their victory at the Second Battle of the Bands has earned them a coveted spot at the prestigious Niagara Arts Centre Rooftop Series on May 24th, hosted by Routine Exploits. It's a testament to their talent and dedication and a well-deserved opportunity to showcase their music to an even wider audience.
Ultimately, the Second Battle of the Bands was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of creativity, passion, and the unifying power of music. And as the echoes of applause faded into the night, one thing became abundantly clear: the spirit of music lives on, stronger and more vibrant than ever before.

Abby participated in the Ontario Singing Finals for Open Mic Canada last Friday, March 15th, at the City Playhouse Theatre in Thornhill, Ontario. There were 20 contestants in her age category, 13-19 yr olds. Abby had a fantastic experience and placed 4th in the province! Here is her performance: "Hello" by Adele
As a result of her newspaper debut, “The Source” TV, hosted by Mike Balsom, reached out to complete an interview. You can watch it attached to this article, where she performs an original song on the show!
Abby has another audition on April 7th in Guelph for the SummerFolk Arts Festival in Owen Sound in August. CHCH has asked her to perform on Friday, May 17th, for their fun music Friday segment and she has also received two invitations to perform at upcoming local fundraisers in the fall!

Get ready to rock, as Secord's Student Council is gearing up to host an epic Battle of the Bands at Warehouse in downtown St. Catharines on April 10! Tickets are limited to 180 and are first come, first served.
The lineup is locked in, with four talented bands ready to take the stage and compete for the top spot. The winning band will be honoured to represent Secord at the DSBN Battle of the Bands at the newly constructed West Niagara Secondary School.
The excitement is building as music lovers eagerly anticipate an electrifying night of live music and some incredible talent. Get your tickets before they're sold out -- don't wait; there are only 180 tickets available! Tickets are $5 and are being sold to Laura Secord students only. You can get your tickets at lunch in the cafeteria being sold by members of the Student Council.

In a vibrant clash of creativity, Laura Secord once again played host to the annual DSBN Arts Battle, where artistic prowess took center stage, and Governor Simcoe emerged as the reigning champions.
The event, a colourful extravaganza of talent and innovation, showcased students' artistic flair from various DSBN schools. The walls of Laura Secord became a canvas for expression, with students unleashing their imaginations in a bid to claim the coveted title.
Governor Simcoe's team, led by their visionary artists, stood out with a mesmerizing display that captured the essence of the theme. Their diverse approach to creativity left a lasting impression on both judges and spectators.
The DSBN Arts Battle celebrated artistic excellence and fostered a sense of camaraderie among the participating schools. Students from different corners of the DSBN community came together to share ideas, collaborate, and celebrate the power of artistic expression.
"The DSBN Arts Battle is more than just a competition; it's a celebration of the incredible talent we have within our school board. The energy, passion, and creativity displayed by all the teams, especially Governor Simcoe, were truly inspiring," shared Jennifer Bolan, one of the event organizers.
