JuMP MENTORSHIP
STAFF ADVISOR - Nicolle Thompson
The JuMP Mentors program involves senior students who are social, friendly, and actively engaged within the school community. These mentors are crucial in supporting two groups: incoming grade 9 students and new students at Secord School.
For grade 9 students, the JuMP Mentors facilitate a smooth transition into high school life. They achieve this through various means, including organizing grade nine orientation events, providing mentorship, and fostering relationships. Additionally, they serve as a valuable resource for answering questions about school courses and teachers. They also offer advice on essential skills like time management, organization, making friends, and joining extracurricular groups. Essentially, they act as a guiding figure for grade 9 students, ensuring they feel supported and included in the school community.
Similarly, the JuMP Mentors create a welcoming environment for new Secord students by connecting with them from day one. These mentors are paired with new students who share similar interests, allowing for an immediate connection. On the first day, they provide tours of the school and review the new student's schedule, ensuring they feel comfortable navigating the school environment. They also share tips and tricks for integrating into the school community and actively connect new students with clubs, teams, and events that align with their interests. Moreover, they make sure to include the new student in their group during lunchtime, fostering a sense of belonging. Throughout the initial weeks, they regularly check in on the new student, offering support and guidance as they adjust to their new school surroundings.
Overall, the JuMP Mentors program aims to ease the transition process for both grade 9 students and new Secord students by providing guidance, support, and a sense of belonging within the school community.
