Sundiata Project
Sundiata is the main character in the West African epic called the Epic of Sundiata. The story is based on the life of Sundiata Keita, who later became the founder of the Mali Empire. In the story, Sundiata faces many challenges growing up, including being unable to walk when he was young and being forced into exile. Despite these struggles, he becomes strong, returns to his homeland, and leads his people to defeat a powerful enemy. Because he risks his life to protect and save his people, he is often considered a hero.
For our assignment, we wrote an argumentative essay about what it means to be a hero and whether Sundiata fits that definition. The goal was to analyze the story and support our opinions with clear reasons and evidence. In my essay, I argued that Sundiata is a hero because he risked his life to protect and save others. Through this project, I practiced developing stronger argumentative writing and clearly explaining my ideas with supporting evidence.
Newton Rocket
The element of art we focused on was space, demonstrated by the distance between the rocket and the ground during launch. Our design process began with researching how to build the rocket, then gathering materials and assembling them. We measured a cork to fit the bottle, used a funnel to pour vinegar inside, and added straws to help with balance.
During testing, the rocket barely moved at first. On a second attempt, it still didn’t launch successfully. One improvement could have been using a cork that fits more tightly to create better pressure.
The principles of design we applied were movement and balance. This experiment also demonstrates Newton’s Third Law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In our experiment, the action was the pressure building inside the bottle, and the reaction was the rocket attempting to lift off the ground.
