Arthur Miller wrote the play ‘’ The crucibles'’. He wrote the play to show history could repeat itself and this was in contrast to accusations of communism and the Salem witch trials and saying accusing more and more people would not do anything but cause more death. Although Miller claims his play is historically accurate, his portrayal of Tituba demonstrates inaccuracy due to her true identity, her name that was being used and the authority he uses in his play.
To begin Miller portrayed Tituba as black instead of her true identity being “ Native american” Based on “The trial of Tituba”, In the nineteenth century it was assumed that all of the americas enslaved people from the seventh century were black, however there were at least two and half million enslaved native americans before the mid nineteenth century, Tatbe was uniformly described as indian.
In addition, in the play “The Crucible” Arthur Miller goes on in the play to describe her with the name “Tituba”. The use of the word Tituba is mostly referred to in history books and the ending “uba’’ relates to west African names in records of enslaved people. In the book trial of Tatebe, they use Tatebe because it frees her to the extent of the myths that are attended to Tituba.
Furthermore Arthur Miller in the play uses only two people, Hathorne and Danforth, to show the authority although there were several more judges of almost equal authority. A special court known as court of oyar and terminer because of judges power to determine cases, was set up by the colony’s governor and this all had to be proven to jaguar massachusetts law.
Although Miller claims his play is historically accurate, his portrayal of Tituba demonstrates inaccuracy due to her true identity , her name that was being used and the authority he uses in his play. The Crucible being historically accurate plays a big part in how Tituba is being portrayed in history and how we develop a true understanding of his play and the Salem witch trials.

Arthur Miller wrote the essay “ Why I Wrote the Crucible” to reflect on the process of his researching , writing, and how he found inspiration for the play. Miller claims he wrote The Crucible because of his marriage as revealed by his use of a short anecdote of his marriage, logos, and imagery.
To begin Miller uses imagery to give a description of how Miller described Abigail. Miller writes “ I was made up into a fist-came down exceeding lightly- Abigail cried out her fingers- her fingers burn”. The imagery is appropriate for the message he conveys because it shows his view on Abigail and this helps how he portrays her in the play he created.
Second Miller uses logos to give facts about the historical context of the Salem witchcraft. Miller writes “ I visited Salem for the first time - in the gloomy courthouse - read the transcripts of the witchcraft trials of 1692”. The use of logos in his essay give some historical context on where he got his base of his play and also helped his overall decision into creating the play The Crucible.
Lastly Miller uses a short anecdote of his marriage to show a contribution on why he did the crucible. Miller writes “ My own marriage of twelve years was teetering and I knew more than I wished to know about where the blame lay.” The use of Miller adding his personal life and reflecting on how he could relate to this played a big part on why he wrote the Crucible and how he felt over the year,
In conclusion Millers claims he wrote The Crucible based on relating to his marriage as revealed by his use of a short anecdote of his marriage , logos, and imagery.

Allegory in The Great Gatsby
F Scott Fitzgerald was considered one of the greatest American writers, born in 1896, Fitzgerald wanted to write a novel about the Jazz Age while incorporating elements of his life. In his youth, Fitzgerald had fallen for an upper class girl ,and was told, “rich girls don't marry poor boys.” He had also served in the war, and was struggling to make something of himself. He incorporated elements of his life into that character of Nick and Gatsby. The book “Great Gatsby” shares the ideas of the American dream through social class and love. Gatsby’s pursuit of the american dream is what lead to his downfall showing how it is unattainable to live the american dream. The fate and classes of the characters reveal that american society in the great gatsby shows the lower class is thought to never obtain the upper class and although they are in the upper class, they show no happiness which reveals it is unrealistic to live the american dream.
To begin, Myrtle attempts to escape her lower class status, and join a higher social class. She believed marrying her husband would help her achieve this but she has an affair with Tom to achieve that status, according to page 137 : ‘’ The death car as the newspapers called it, it didn’t stop; it came out of gathering darkness - Myrtle Wilson, her life violently extinguished, knelt in the road and mingled her thick dark blood with the dust. Myrtle's death symbolizes her desire for the upper class, but she is struck and hit by a car belonging to someone from a high social class. This shows the idea that the working class can never truly obtain the life of the upper class.
Secondally, Gatsby strives to obtain the upper class, pretending to live a lavish lifestyle. However he cannot escape the class he was born into, which makes it impossible for him to achieve the American dream. According to page 89: “My house looks well, doesn't it? He demanded.- His eyes went over it, every arched door and square tower.’’ It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it. - “ Do you like it?’ “ I love it, but don’t see how you live there all alone.” Gatsby tries to impress Daisy by showing his mansion, competing with Tom for her love. However, unlike Tom who already lives the status Gatsby wants, Gatsby must lie and pretend, but this reveals his flaws.
Lastly, Tom was born in the upper class, but despite inheriting his luxurious lifestyle, he still felt unsatisfied with what he had. The text states “ I want to see you , “ said Tom intently. “ Get on the next train.”- “ I’ll meet you by the news-stand on the lower level.” She nodded and moved away from him just as George Wilson emerged with two chairs from his office door.- “Doesn’t her husband object?” “Wilson? He thinks she is going to see her sister in New York. He’s so dumb he doesn't know he’s alive”. Tom’s affairs with another woman reveals he is unsatisfied within his marriage, despite being a part of the upper class.
While some may argue that the characters in The Great Gatsby achieved the American dream while the lower class did not, the idea of truly living the American Dream proves unattainable. Daisy's choice to stay with Tom, despite knowing about his affair shows her idea of stability that he provides over genuine happiness. ‘’I called Daisy half an hour after we found him, called her instinctively and without hesitation. But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon, and taken their baggage with them.” Although Daisy disapproves of Tom being unfaithful to her and the way he conducts himself, she stays with him to maintain a luxurious lifestyle he provides. The American Dream promises happiness and a perfect life built on love , but Tom’s affair with others and Daisy's materialistic ideals reveal their relationship lacks a real connection. This demonstrates that the upper class is unachievable with the ideals of the American Dream.
In conclusion Gatsby’s pursuit of the american dream is what lead to his downfall showing how it is unattainable to live the american dream. The fate and classes of the characters reveal that american society in the great gatsby shows the lower class is thought to never obtain the upper class and although they are in the upper class, they show no happiness which reveals it is unrealistic to live the american dream. Myrtle being murdered while trying to climb the social class ladder, Gatsby being killed as soon as he thinks he is close to achieving the upper class and Tom having dissatisfaction with his marriage. In the great gatsby , no character truly ahvies the american dream even if they think they do. This remains relevant in today’s society, where the upper class has advantages while the lower class is left to deal with the result of their actions. Many, like Gatsby strive to achieve the upper class status but unfortunately end up with nothing. Regardless of the social class , the American dream remains unattainable.
