Foundations of Engineering
Building a Box!
Today our teacher told us we are going to learn how to use the tools in the lab by building a box.
Miter Saw
Safety
When using a Miter saw you should wear safety glasses and never touch the blade guard
How to use
You push the blade down into the whatever you're cutting and then you let the blade back up manually
Result
We used the miter saw to cut our piece of wood into 5 pieces of 9 1/2 inches and 2 3 3/4 inches
Biscuit Joiner
Rules
Wear safety glasses
Don't put your finger near the blade
Don't move it while the biscuit joiner is running
Keep the biscuit joiner flat and aligned with the lines you drew.
How to use
You line it up on the object you're cutting, then turn the biscuit joiner on, start moving it up into the object you're cutting, and lastly, you take it off the object you were cutting into.
What I made
This is the result of using the biscuit joiner to connect the two pieces, then gluing them with wood glue, and then using clamper to keep them in place
Table saw
How to use
To use the table saw you turn it on, then line up what you want to cut on the blade and then start cutting.
Safety
While using you should wear safety glasses remove loose clothing, and don't put your finger in reach of the saw when using.
What I made
Today we cut both sides of the wood with the table saw to make it even. Above is a picture of the final results.
CNC Machine
Safety Rules
1.Strap the object you're cutting
2.Use the appropriate drill bit
3.Wear safety glasses and ear protection
How it works
The CNC Machine cuts out the image you want depending on your y-axis, x-axis, and z-axis. In class we used VCarve-Pro which produces the object you want to cut, while Shopbot, the other program I used, starts the cutting process
Result
Result of using VCarve-pro and Shopbot to cut my name out on the CNC Machine
Orbital Sander
Rules
Wear safety goggles while using
Keep the sand paper away from your hand
Don't place on table
How to use
The sander is used to smoothen your wood. To use it you press the power button, then level the sander on the wood, then sand as much as you want. Lastly, you turn it off and put it up.
What I made
This is the result of me sanding my box to even it out and make it look better.
Stain
Rules
Wear gloves while using
Wear protective clothing
Close lid securely
How to use
You open the tube then slightly dip a t-shirt in it and spread it along the wood. After that, you would use as much as you would like and let it dry
Final product
This is the result of staining the box and letting it dry
Lantern Project Intro
Lantern
Benchmarks/Stamps
Anime Design
I like this since it's my favorite anime and white which is a nice color
Name design
This one uses your name and a cool logo
Hand Written
I like how it looks like they drew the heart their selves
3d
This one is looks 3d even though its not
Illusion
This one is cool since it tricks your brain into thinking it's wrapping around each other
Pattern
I liked this one since it has a cool pattern and is aesthetic
Idea Development
This design is cool since you can tell who owns it and has a cool spiral logo
Inkscape & Glowforge
In class we learned how to use Inkscape to makes cool shapes. As we made the shapes we learned how to make differences in shapes and make them look good. At the end we cut them out using glowforge.
RGB LED Stop Light
Today I learned how to control RGB LED lights. First, we copied a code into a new space to get it changing colors, but there was a problem with the code. It wasn't accurate for the colors so we had to add -255 to each color to make it accurate. After we changed it we removed all but 3 colors and changed them to red yellow, and green.
Arduino Controlled LED
In class, I learned how to use Arduino to control LED lights. To do this you open Arduino then go to file, examples, basics, and lastly you open blink. We also learned what compiling is and what uploading is. The coolest part was when we got to change the code to make the LED lights go faster.
Final Latern Project
Today I made my shape in inscape and cut it out using glow forge. After that, I hot glued the shape into my box to create my lantern.
