Unit 1: Water Molecules and Lab
For our first lab in AP Biology we did a lab about the properties of water.For this lab we started off with coloring the water, and then cutting slightly down the middle of the xylem of the celery and placing it in the water to let it sit for 48 hours. When we came back 2 days later we saw a big difference in the celery. First, the celerary had pink pigmentation at the bottom of the celery.Once we started cutting even more into the celery, we saw that the vesels in the celery transported the pigmented water throughout the celery.

This poster is about surface tension.Surface tenison results increased hydrogen bonding forces between water molecules at the surface.This property allows liquid to resist exernal force happens through cohesion.
This poster is about solvency.Solvency is waters ability to dissolve subsances.This has something to do with waters polarity and structure.Water has hydrogen bonding which has a negative and positive molecle to atract.
This poster is about Specific Heat and Vaporization. Specific heat is a measurement of heat that needs to be absorbed or lost for 1g of a substance to change its tempature by 1c.This helps stabilze climates in the enviroement.Vaporization helps remove heat from the body through sweat.This helps humans and animals cool down.
This poster is about Cohesion and Adhesion. Cohesion is water molecules sticking to each other. Addhesion is water molcules sticking to other substances. Cohesion creates surface tensions and adhesion help with transporting water through plants and animals.
Macromolecules Lab and Lab Report
In AP Biology we did a macromolecule lab. The macromolecules we were learning about were Nucleic Acids, Lipids, Carbohydrates, and Proteins. For this lab we used indicators to test the presence of lipids,nucleic carbohydrates, and proteins in different foods. The foods we used in this lab were oil,milk,oatmeal,apple juice and water. We did four test, the first test we tested which foods would leave a grease stain, the other three test we used ten drops of the different solution for each test to see if it will make a change in color for the foods.Then, we would write down descriptions of what we see on our papers.
This poster is about carbohydrates.Carbohydrates are foods like pasta,bread potatos. They have glucose,fructose,starch,ect.These are quick energy foods. It is the most abundant compund in living organims.Carbohydrates are in a 1:2:1 ratio far as structure.
This poster is about lipids. Lipids are things like fats,oils,waxs,ect.Lipids are not in a 1:2:1 ratio far as structure.Lipid compounds come in saturated and unsaturated forms.They are also hydrophobis and wont dissolve in water.Lipids protet the internal organsn and provide good insulation for the body.
This poster is about proteins. Proteins are put togehter by the ribosomes in the cell.It has macromolucules which are folded and coiled so that it can carry out its functions.Strong bonds called disulfide bridges help protein maintain a particular shape.
This poster is nucleic acids. Nucleic acids have phosphate base, sugar, and nitrogen base.Nucleic acids are RNA and DNA. It is also double helix. It helps share and transfer genetic information.
