Black History Month - Personal Hero Project (ELA)
During Black History Month, we were tasked with identifying someone both considered a personal hero and influential to Black History. I chose Sidney Poitier, the first African American to win an Oscar (one of the highest forms of achievement in the film industry). Below is a slideshow of my research on Sidney Poitier, his greatness involved in Black History, and his achievement in film.
Above is an essay based on the story of Sundiata, the Lion King. It is about what qualities make a hero and how Sundiata is a hero in comparison.
Quadratic Word-Problem Project
This work represents a poster-project we were assigned in Algebra 1. It was a project when were still in the quadratics unit. We had to come up with our own quadratic word problem, make the equation that represents it, and solve it.
I chose this work because it was one of the first projects we've ever had to do in math, and I'm proud of how good my group did with such a demanding assignment. My group was the only one to turn in this project on time (or do it at all).
One way I think I (we) could improve the work is by really checking over the math part of the project. While everything was correct, I feel like we could've explained how we got our answer a little better.
9th Grade PBL Project: Water Immersive Experience
Everyone in their respective coding classes had digitally manufacture or create pieces of the Immersive Experience. We wanted to resemble real life Immersive Experiences and create a digitized museum. Some students coded their own games that visitors could play, some created digital art, some created physically immersive objects, etc.
1) For the Water Immersive Experience, I made digital art that depicts bioluminescent animals.
2) I used an app called Procreate to digitally draw/create the pieces. Everything involving the make of my work was digital.
3) I incorporated the theme of water into my work by drawing bioluminescent animals and plant life you'd actually find in the sea.
4) Honestly, I'm most proud of how I used light in my work. I think I showed bioluminescent part really well.
5) Something I would've changed or improved if I had the time would be my art piece of the bioluminescent flora. While the lights were good, I think the lines could've been better.
Science Project: Newton's Rocket
Newton's Rocket
We got a plastic water bottle, between 3-4 straws, a cork that fit the bottle opening, a specific amount of vinegar, a roll of baking soda, and tape as need. We positioned/taped the straws around the bottle and put the ends a little past the bottle opening so they'd work as a base for the bottle/rocket. After that, we poured a certain amount vinegar into the bottle and found a cork that fit the bottle opening. After testing that the cork secured the vinegar inside the bottle, we rolled baking soda into 1-ply toilet paper.
After making the rocket, we walked outside and put the baking soda into the bottle and filled it with the cork. Then, we flipped the bottle/rocket upside down and shook it. Unfortunately, my group's rocket didn't get any airtime.
In making this rocket, we had to consider things like the shape of the cork to determine if it could keep the vinegar and baking soda inside the rocket. Also, before we could even make the rocket, we had to look at a video to get research on it (as in how to make it and what should happen if the experiment works). Lastly, we had to think about proportion for some aspects of the rocket; we had to make sure the straws were evenly aligned on the bottle.
