What does it mean to volunteer? Why would Drew require you to volunteer for 100 hours during your high school career?
Volunteering means to offer your time to help others or support a cause without being paid. It’s done out of a desire to positively impact your community or the world. I would say an important part of attending Drew is being active in your community. Drew has always done well at providing students with opportunities to cater to the neighborhood and to the city of Atlanta. We've had an EmpowerU conference where each student wrote an essay on something they are passionate about and the community was able to come and listen to our concerns. The National Spanish Honor Society held a toy drive through toy4tots so little kids could have toys for Christmas. We also have a service event every MLK Day where we made lunches for the hungry people of Atlanta. Drew ensures students graduate with at least 100 service hours to ensure we are equipped to build social awareness, develop our work skills, and promote personal growth.
We got together with United Way of Greater Atlanta to put together shoe boxes for homeless people. We got to decorate the boxes however we choose, then they get stuffed with toiletries and necessities. There were also people in charge of writing encouraging letters to but inside the boxes. At the end we had a competition to see who had the "best" one.I didn't win the competition but I had a lot of fun.
Drew holds an annual senior service day. The entire grade is split into groups, then sent to different locations around Atlanta to provide their service. One group went to Atlanta mission where the sorted through donated clothes. Another group went to the Gateway center where they
My group walked down to our local YMCA. We helped organize a few our the file cabinets and the main gym equipment locker. We also did some tidying up in the daycare closet and organized the book shelf.
Drew had our annual HBCU night where we have representatives come to speak to students about their schools. We had reps our alumni from Morris Brown, FAMU, Tuskegee University, and Albany State University. Before that during the school day, I assisted in moderating the Drew Staff alumni panel. We talked to alumni from Howard University, FAMU, Clark Atlanta University, and North Carolina A&T. We asked them questions about why they chose their schools, how was their HBCU experience, and how it compared to their high schools. The school also surprised us with a few members from the Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi sorority.
