In class, we read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." It's about a black and impoverished woman who passed away at a young age. She died from deadly cervical cancer, but her immortal cells continued to exist. Most people were unaware of Henrietta, her family, and the awful lives they led, even though her cells were well-known. Concerns regarding cell donation ethics and privacy have been brought up by the usage of Hela cells. We wrote essays on whether we think the Lacks family deserved financial reparations.
