Throughout my high school career, I have participated in a slew of community service events, but the most influential service opportunity for me was my involvement in United Way of Greater Atlanta's student union, Youth United. As a board member, I am responsible for brainstorming and organizing volunteer opportunities for members of the Atlanta community. Our mission is to collectively encourage people to invest and give back to their respective communities. Since my acceptance, I have played an active role in organizing many community service opportunities. In just a few short months I have participated in organizing a food drive, building portable libraries, and volunteering at a foster care foundation. I also starred in a media project that was filmed at Vox news, to encourage Atlanta youth to use their voices and be a part of the change they want to see in their communities. In February of 2020, I participated in a service project at a warehouse for families in need. The warehouse relies on donations so that they can provide necessities for families who can't afford to buy them on their own. For this project, I was tasked with organizing an entire shed of bedroom furniture and finding suitable pieces for a special family that needed a crib for their child.
What does it mean to volunteer?
To volunteer is to selflessly give your time to help others and be willing to put others needs before your own in those moments.
Why would Drew require you volunteer for 100 hours during your high school career?
I believe that Drew required us to complete 100 community service hours so that we could learn to value charity and service.
