Artist Statement:Element Audio Book
Our audio book is about 4 heroes from 4 different kingdoms(Silver, Glass, Firework, Glow,) They face an element called Beryllium from the universe kingdom who wants to takeover the world and have the heroes as her servants. The Kingdoms meet for the first time to talk about the situation, but Beryllium blows up the meeting place. The elements battle and chaos surrounds them. They realize that they were never balanced after all without Beryllium who was a part of their family. They united their powers and exam balanced with their newly accepted family members. Our group wanted to represent the true meaning of an elemental group/family. A difficulty that we encountered was having everyone do their part and finding the time to fit it in their individual assignments of the project. I learned the elemental qualities of each element. I learned that Beryllium is from a star and is used in nuclear explosions. I also learned that calcium is used in glass. On 3D paint, I learned to blend colors using a spray paint. I also learned to use one point and two point perspective, focal point, and edit background pictures. The video is linked here.
Empowerment Conference: Hair Diversity Rap
I look out in the crowd to witness the extraordinary hair types of this diverse world. In my song, I spoke about the hatred, joy, and stereotypes of having different hair. I chose to shift the hatred into self-love and empower the community that I look upon on right now. Have you ever felt like you wanted to tear out the very thing that was unique to you? I know that at some moment or time, there has been something that you disliked about yourself. For example, hairstylist Ruth has been working for 14 yrs on hair designing. She states, ”I recognized the fact that the reason I was perming and weaving my hair was because of self-hatred.” She also reflect on her experience where she begged her mother to buy her a wig, which was also addressed in my poem as ,”Beg my Mother, Cry and beg , straighten, and smother my unbearable dread.”Another Asian hairstylist states,” ,”I grew up in Georgia where everyone was blond haired and blue eyed, and I always had this image of myself as an Asian Barbie,” Ms. Rim said. “Now it’s crazy because one-third of the Asians I see in New York or Los Angeles are blond.” Other hairstylists in the Asian fashion world believe that the blond persona is rising frequently such as Kelly Su who says that 50% of her clients are choosing light colors for their hair.
Ruth’s and Ms.Rim’s confession gives a view of her feelings toward her hair and how a widespread of civilization judges by simply looking at themselves. Comparison is the key factor. Comparing and thinking that you should reflect another individual, because that is what’s “normal.”Be yourself. Normality is rare. There is no one type of hair, nor should there be. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so look in the mirror and recognize.
Book Project: God's Rebel
My book is an extension of the short story I wrote in my 9th grade literature class. It tells of a god named, Ayo Vida Ultimo, who rebels against the spiritual world. There are two separate worlds of the spiritual world; the underworld and Upperworld. The Upper world is very strict and sexist when it comes to women roles. It is a colorful, but boring world that bases its morals on the principles of good defeats evil. The underworld is diverse, since all creatures are sent and venture there. Ayo is the protagonist, but her character sends a message that it's ok to be the antagonist at times too. She is punished by her father by her reckless behavior and sent to Earth. She meets a male god who kidnaps her and takes her to the underworld. Through all the complications and betrayals, they eventually fall in love. The rebel god is then captured by her father and tortured in the dungeon, while the underworld battles the upper world. Who betrays? Is she still in love? Will she side with the underworld or the Upper?
History Ancient Civilization Project
In world history, our class learned how to make clay. We tried to experience what the people in ancient civilization have to go through. Someone would dig up dirt, while the other poured water in the mini pool. Another student would step in dirt and mix it into a thick smooth form of the dirt. We placed the clay in a clay wooden box and later took it out to witness a clay brick. We also made clay cups using rolled clay that we spinned on top of the others without forming holes. We had to test it out to see if it could hold the water. The last thing we did was build what we thought the houses or huts looked like. Most of us thought the huts looked like teepees and built teepees with bamboo sticks and twine.
In World Literature, we created our very own tribes. The students had to think about the foundation of the tribe including Government, Culture, Economy, ect. It was very fun to make up a society in your own creative environment. For example, my group created a rainforest tribe called the Vibi tribe. Since they were in the rainforest, they were excellent healers and tree-climbers. They had a neighboring underwater tribe that provided them with their most highest currency such as beautiful shells and pearls. We had to make a government that benefitted the people's values and fit within the economy. It was a great and creative project that I had fun making. In World History, we made our own foods derived from either the eastern or western hemisphere. We had to incorporate the possibility of diseases flowing from either side as we took some of each hemisphere's foods, while making a dinner plate from scratch. We had to make the dishes in a certain time limit and share it with the judges(Teachers) for approval. Our side had potatoes, vegetable jasmine rice with roasted chicken breasts and a assortment of other veggies. The pictures are listed here:
We had various mini projects in Chemvas(Chemistry/Art) using textile methods such as weaving, knitting, and/or knotting. We incorporated random acts of kindness by making our own mini projects using one of the textile techniques. It was a very creative and fun way to express art. We also made African wax-print and learned how the dyes interact with each other in the specific type of fabric that was used. We made the print by gluing our design on fabric and dying different colors of our choice. We then peeled off the glue to reveal the amazing design. The pictures are listed here:
In the Urban Harp Youth Ensemble, I was one of the three people chosen to go to play the harp at an event with many international executives and top board members at a location picked by the Southern Company, which is a major contributor to the East Lake Foundation, The PGA Tour, and to Drew Charter School. We did exceptionally well and played with content hearts. It was a very fancy event with many encouraging people. Hence, we had a great experience. The pictures are listed here:
In Spanish, I finally accomplished speaking in under 5 minutes. We have to use complex components to speak at least one paragraph about a specific topic. I did my topic on Day of the Dead where I listed pictures that related to the celebration and described it in about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I am in Spanish 3, but it was very hard for me to speak fluently in spanish. I could always write really well, but speaking was always on an entirely different level. I reached my goal in speaking! I also have been making a spanish song. I love music and I thought that being bilingual is also a good way to express your speaking skills through music. My song is called "Te Amo Mucho" which means I love you alot. It's about love and how there are the benefits, but love can kill you as well. I am not finished yet, but I am working on it as we speak! My Day of the Dead presentation is showcased below:
(5/7/20) The past two months has been a significant change, but doing online school work is not that bothersome for me. I can wake up when I would like to and eat good food instead of cafeteria food that doesn't offer as many vegetarian options like home does. I can work at my own pace, burn incense, listen to music, and overall obtain a good working environment setup just for me. I would say that I am comfortable at home. My grades are the same and I do not have to worry about the anxiety that comes with taking important tests at the end of the year. I'm less stressed and I can finally focus on me and what I want to do in life. This is a time to explore your talents and discover newfound talents that you never honed on before, because of the constant attention school needs from its students.
I do admit that it not comprehending a subject has been frustrating seeing that sometimes the teacher takes a while to get back with you. I personally think that they should evaluate the student's grades on simply if you pass or fail. We need to think about the children who do not have a good family life or have decreasing mental health such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, ect. Now they are forced to stay in the house by themselves separated from the rest of society. I just think we need to take that more into account, especially when it comes to our grades in this setting.`To conclude this entry, our ela and history classes connect, because of the topic of war. Chemistry also ties into this subject matter because of the nuclear chemical agents and the result the explosion impacts.
(5/14/20)
I created Universoul Clouds to demonstrate the cloud city and used the web to show the volume of the circles and connect them to each other. Charles law states that volume increases temperature. The web is supposed to represent the air temperature inside the circle that is at least 1 degree higher than the air outside. The density advances as a result. I made a small dark blue circle underneath the big circle to show the people coming from earth into this new world. The population’s arrival into the cloud cities made me choose the name UniverSOUL Cloudz. I think I used a lot of symbolism in this piece and tried to make it as creative as possible. I wish I had an artist pen though.
(5/14/20) ChemVAS Cooks Project dealing with the cemical combinations and reactions that takes place inside of different foods and its cooking tools.
Swan art created by Afiya Cave
The ChemVas Cook project is a project where we are in groups and create food dishes and use the ceramic and chemistry process to create art to attract people to our table. It was created by sculpting a swan out of clay and refining it by using clay-water. After two days, she painted glaze on her swan and put it in the kiln where it became smooth and even more refined. She tried to put different colors of glaze on the base to represent the multi colors of the water beneath the swan. In the swan art, she used ideas from tropical/paradise. The swan art was created to credit the animals found in tropical climates and also represent grace/love. Afiya wanted to show these aspects in her art piece. She wanted to illustrate peace and tranquility in our demonstration of paradise. Overall, the product is creative and colorful but the drying process of the paint was a bit peculiar.
Head Craft Art created by Afiya Cave
The ChemVas Cook project is a project where we are in groups and create food dishes and use the ceramic and chemistry process to create art to attract people to our table. In this human shaped craftsmanship, Afiya got her idea of the head from Aztec art pieces such as the clay works in ancient history. She wanted to show a different piece of culture through paradise and give an addition to the Plate art created by Destinie Johnson. The glaze was much better this time around than the swan. This was mostly because she did many coats of glaze instead of just one. She first crafted the head separately starting with the eyes and added different colors of glaze. She wanted to make it look like a ring so you could hold it as such. She then put it in the kiln.
