AP Exams are cumulative tests that cover the whole course. They include multiple choice questions and also written responses. Depending on the course your AP test might include FRQs (free response questions, common for science and math tests and some social studies tests) SAQs (short answer questions, common for history tests) or essays (there are a few different types and they are common on English and history tests).
Students should review both the content and skills for their course. The most effective reviews are active and engaging (not simply watching a video or reading your notes). Here are some suggestions below.
Research shows that students are more likely to retain information and be successful on exams if they study for short sessions (an hour or less) over a longer period of time (a month or more). Consider starting your AP exam review the week after spring break.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by your AP exams or you aren't sure where to start your studying journey see your teacher or Mrs. Stone for suggestions. We can help you make a to-do list or a calendar to break it down into achievable steps.
Suggestions to review content
AP Daily Review videos ALL AP classes have daily review videos created by the College Board to help you go over material. Here are directions for how to access the videos in AP Classroom.
Khan Academy review and practice questions Khan Academy offers free review lessons, videos, and practice multiple choice questions for several AP Courses (Calculus, Statistics, US History, World History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Macroeconomics)
Quizlet Quizlet has thousands of flash cards (and you can make your own!), search by subject area and "ap exam" to find sets for your specific course. Studying the specific vocabulary and being able to make connections across units will help boost your performance. When you have a rich understanding of the content information you can give detailed responses in your writing!
Create graphic organizers! Charts, diagrams, timelines, mind maps, flow charts etc. are great ways to connect content from different units in your course. You can make these on paper, use the tools in Word or Google Docs, use an online infographic tool like Canva, or use flashcards to build a 2-d presentation. Consider using color to note categories. Graphic organizers are a great tool because both the process of creating them and using them will enhance your long term memory.
Suggestions to practice skills
Use the practice questions on AP Classroom These directions explain how to access your class's exam page and exam preparation materials. There are practice materials for every AP course.
Create a study group! Get together either in person or online with peers from your class. Consider dividing up the material to present reviews to each other, quizzing each other on the content, or working practice problems or drafting essays together.
Are you in AP Gov or APUSH? Use the practice questions in your Amsco book at the end of every unit.
Are you in AP Calculus? Use the Delta Math assignments to practice working the problems
Check out a review book. We have review books available for checkout for many AP Courses, please see Mrs. Stone. Durham County Library also has many different exam prep books in their collection but check them out soon as they are popular items this time of year. Use these books for practice questions and even practice tests in some cases.
Some AP exams will occur off campus at Bethel Christian Center. Riverside High School will provide activity bus transportation from Bethel to RHS after 8 AM exams, from RHS to Bethel for 12 PM exams and from Bethel to RHS after 12 PM exams.
