We offer 22 Advanced Placement courses across the curriculum. While some courses meet graduation requirements and allow students to challenge themselves, others are electives that encourage deeper learning in their areas of interest.
AP Classes are college level courses taught at Riverside by experienced and engaging teachers. These challenging courses prepare students for college level work and give them an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school by taking the corresponding AP exam. Research shows that students who take AP classes in high school have better college acceptance rates and are more likely to earn a college degree in four years.

All AP students must create a MyAP account. We use these accounts to access course content and review materials and to register for your AP exams. You will need a join code from your teacher. If you have trouble please see Mrs. Stone

AP exams are held nationally the first two weeks of May and the schedule is made by the College Board. Riverside does not get to choose the date or time of the exam because each test occurs synchronously according to national standards.
The deadline to register for Fall 2022 course exams is November 1, 2022. The deadline to register for Spring 2023 exams is March 1, 2023.
Here are some of the commonly asked questions about AP exams.
Am I required to take the AP exam?
Students are not required to take their AP exam but we strongly encourage it. Students will not lose the additional credit on their GPA if they don't take the exam and it will not impact their grade in the course in any way if they do not take the exam.
We encourage students to take the exam because...
you can earn college credit. If you earn a 3, 4, or 5 all UNC system schools are required to give you credit for the course. Depending on the university you attend and your college major this can save you significant time and money in college.
it's a good way to prepare for taking a true cumulative final exam at the collegiate level
Even if you aren't feeling 100% confident about the exam we encourage you to take it because you could have a great day during the test and we don't want you to miss out on earning college credit
Do I have to pay for the AP exam?
No, the NC Department of Public Instruction pays for all DPS students to take their AP exams at no cost. If you miss your exam or change your mind about taking it after the deadline it is possible you will be charged a fee.
Where will I take my test?
Many tests are scheduled off-site at some of our community partners' locations. This is so students will have a quiet place to take their exam without the distraction of bells ringing or students in the hallway.
Riverside will provide transportation from/to the school and the testing locations.
More information will be available about specific testing locations in spring 2023.
When will I get my test scores?
Scores are released by the College Board in July.
What happens if I miss my exam?
Contact Mrs. Stone right away! Depending on the circumstances we may be able to schedule a make up exam for you at low or zero cost.
