Rituals and Routines:

These need to be similar to those in a general physical education class. The following format includes:

  • Entering the gymnasium

  • Instant activity

  • Attendance

  • Warm up/Fitness

  • Skill/Activity focus

  • Closure

  • Cleanup

  • Transition to class

Tips for Inclusion

  • Collaborate with special education teachers

  • Incorporate a variety of settings; large group, small group, parallel play

  • Common adaptations:
Rules – modifications to allow students to be able to participate safely, to be challenged, and to experience success
Equipment – size, weight, color, grip, texture, lower or raise targets
Number of Players – small-sided games give students the best opportunity to participate and learn rules in a more controlled setting
Playing Area – Decrease or increase the playing area depending on student needs, clearly mark boundaries, change lighting or temperature for students with sensitivities
Movement Patterns - decrease overall distance, modifying the movement pattern (e.g., using a scooter, using wheelchairs)

Teacher considerations about adaptations/modifications:

  • Is it safe for all students and is everyone included?

  • Do the students with disabilities agree to the adaptation/modification?

  • Is the activity’s objective maintained?

  • Is a challenge still included?

  • Can the adaptation/modification be minimized or eventually eliminated as the students continue to develop their skill?
