1. Why is confidentiality so important?


Reasons for protecting the privacy of children and families


-Laws and statutes are in place to protect the privacy of individuals and to ensure that information is released only when necessary.

-Confidentiality restrictions protect personal information from disclosure.

-Prevent improper dissemination of information about children and families that might increase the likelihood of discrimination against them.

-Protecting confidential information can be necessary to protect personal security

-Confidentiality provisions also protect family security

-Children and families also want to avoid prejudice or differential treatment

2. Understanding confidentiality


Confidentiality is the obligation not to disclose willingly any information obtained in confidence. Information disclosed in a response to a search warrant, a subpoena or a legal requirement for mandatory reporting is not a breach of confidentiality.

3. Basic Principles


-Respect for an individual’s right to privacy.

-Respect for human relationships in which personal information is shared.

-Appreciation of the importance of confidentiality to both individuals and society.

-Expectations that those who pledge to safeguard confidential information will do so.


4. Confidentiality in our mentorship program


As a mentor, you may have access to personal information about other students, related to their disability and the services they receive through special education and related services.


-Follow the basic principles to ensure confidential information is not disclosed inappropriately.

-Connect with the Teacher when information is necessary to be shared and/or discussed.







AGREEMENT OF CONFIDENTIALITY

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM



___SCHOOL NAME)_______requires students participating in the mentorship program to sign this agreement in order to comply with district policies protecting the privacy of students. You are reminded of the importance of confidentiality and the purpose of your role in the program.


As a participant of the mentorship program, you may become aware of confidential information about specific students. This information may include such information as behavior, disabilities, and related matters.


By signing this agreement, you agree that you will not disclose any confidential information except to school employees that have a need to know.
