Hello NSE Families!
The staff and students at North Salem are off to a great start this school year. We have been spending a lot of time on our school-wide PROUD expectations. Teachers and staff are reviewing what each letter in PROUD looks like throughout the school. Something new this year from our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Committee will be to provide all families with ways you can implement PROUD expectations at home.
A reminder to have excuse cards turned in within three days of a students absence so they can be coded as excused. Families are permitted up to 10 parent excuse days for the entire school year, this includes SERF (educational trip) passes. A medical excuse from a doctor is not included in the 10 day parent excuse count, so if your child does see a doctor, I highly encourage you to get a doctor's note if he/she is missing any school. Something new this year that the district is encouraging parents to utilize in place of the electronic excuse card is the option to submit a student's excuse directly through your Skyward Account. This can be done by using the "Attendance" tile then by clicking on "absences." You will then be able to submit an absence request. Instructions on creating an absence request can be found here. This link provides instructions on how to upload a doctor's note.
Our PTO has already begun planning for a variety of events. Whether it be the Read A Thon, Book Fairs, Family Nights, or financing activities for our students and staff, our PTO does great things to support our school. Please look for ways to get involved in our PTO if you are able. Meetings occur every fourth Thursday of the month in our school library.
I am looking forward to a great school year!
In partnership,
Mr. Chris Young

Please take a look a this parent letter that was created for families with information about new Science standards. These new statewide standards are required to be implemented this school year. These standards are typically being referred to as STEELS (Science, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Literacy & Sustainability).
Welcome back parents! It's been a busy start to the school year. Please make sure to update us if your student has any new health concerns or allergies that we should be aware of.
Medical Forms
Students in kindergarten are required to submit a physical (Well Child Checkup) and dental exam.
Students in 3rd grade are required to submit a dental exam.
Exams dated on or after July 1, 2024 can be accepted. If you have not submitted these forms, please do as soon as possible.
Health Hero forms were sent home for our flu vaccine clinic in October. If you are interested in having your student vaccinated, please return the form no later than 10/3. Students will NOT be vaccinated without a signed form.
Medication
Medications should be given at home if possible. If your student does require medication at school, please refer to the following guidelines:
All medication must be brought to school by a parent or responsible adult. Students may not transport medication.
All medication must be in the original container (prescription bottle) with the student's name and prescription information on the bottle.
A physician's order is needed for medication to be given during the school day. This includes over the counter medication such as Tylenol, Tums, Ibuprofen etc. The physician's order must match the prescription.
A new order is required if anything changes with the original order (dose, frequency).
Medication orders, headache plans, asthma action etc are good for 1 school year only. A new order/action plan must be received each school year.
Cough drops may be sent in without a physician's order however they must be kept in the nurse's office. Please send them in a baggie, labeled with your child's name and note giving permission for use during the school day.
EpiPens, inhalers and seizure medications can save your child's life. Please get updated orders and bring these medications to school as soon as possible.
Menstrual Supplies
We received a grant to purchase menstrual supplies for our students. The nurse's office is fully stocked with a variety of menstrual supplies for student's of all ages. If your child needs something during the school day or is in need of supplies at home, please let them know that they can stop by the nurse's office. Supplies are free and available at any time during the school day.
When to Stay Home
Students who have a fever must stay home the next day. For example, if your child has a fever on Monday they may not come to school on Tuesday. They would be able to return on Wednesday as long as they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication. Students should not receive fever reducing medication and be sent to school.
Welcome back, musicians!
K–2 will begin the year with a unit on Beat—the steady pulse and heartbeat of music!
Grades 3–5 will start with a unit on Rhythm, and fifth graders have the exciting opportunity to join chorus. Our first performance will be the District-Wide Choral Festival on Saturday, October 4th at Dover High School.
This year, I’m also thrilled to welcome a high school senior intern, Mr. Drew Moyer. Mr. Moyer is a former Dover Elementary student of mine and plans to study Music Therapy at Slippery Rock University. He will be joining my afternoon classes, and we are so glad to have him with us!
Since I travel between North Salem Elementary and Dover Elementary, it may be difficult to track me down. Please feel free to email me anytime at shaifley@doversd.org.
Looking forward to a fantastic year!
Musically yours,
Mrs. Haifley
