How you see yourself in the digital world,
your offline and online selves
Offline Identity is who you are realistically when you are disconnected and not connected to the internet online communities and websites where as online identity or internet persona, is a social identity that an Internet user establishes in online communities and websites. Whether designing avatars for virtual worlds, selecting profile pictures, or crafting texts to friends, people have countless opportunities to express themselves through digital media. Having a different persona online can also be a real gift for someone who's particularly shy. People who have created idealized online personas may feel frustrated and depressed because of the gap between who they pretend to be online and who they truly are therefore when creating an online identity always be true to yourself.
Body Image
Exposure to media that showcases idealized body types can affect how we view our bodies. When a person does not feel like his or her body meets society’s image of perfection, they can have a difficult time developing a strong self-esteem. Research has documented detrimental effects specifically on women’s body image from exposure to idealized images displayed in traditional media formats such as fashion magazines and television and the impact has since increased with access to social media. Users generally upload only photos that have been carefully taken and selected to maximize attractiveness. Appearance comparison occurs and the term given to this is ‘social surveillance’ where users not only closely examine the content uploaded by others but also critically examine their own posts from other people’s points of view to perceive what is ‘normal’. This resulting in dissatisfaction with one’s own body and appearance.
