Computers and Laptops
A PC is a device that has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You can use a computer to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the internet. You can also use it to edit or create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos. However a disadvantage is that PCs are not portable.
The image below is of the main components. You can see the desktop computer, flat-panel display, speakers, keyboard, and mouse in the picture below. Also labelled is each of the input devices and output devices.
A laptop is a personal computer that is portable and can be easily moved and used in different locations. Most laptops are designed to have all of the functionality of a desktop computer. However, laptops also tend to be more expensive than desktop computers.
Phones and Tablets
In addition to making calls, sending text and voicemail, smart phones connect to the internet over wifi. This means you can use a smartphone for tasks such as checking your email, browsing online, shopping, games etc.
You type on a virtual keyboard and use your fingers to interact with the display. Other features include a digital camera and the ability to play digital music and video files. For many people, a smartphone can actually replace devices like an old laptop or a digital camera.
Tablet computers are portable, the most noticeable difference is that tablets don’t have touchpads or keyboards. Instead, the entire screen is touch-sensitive, allowing you to type on a virtual keyboard and use your finger as a mouse pointer. Tablets let you perform many of the tasks that traditional computers do like browsing the internet, connecting to social media etc. Tablet computers can't necessarily do everything traditional computers can do. For many people, a traditional computer like a desktop or laptop is still needed in order to use some programs or for work purposes but the convenience of a tablet means it may be ideal as a second computer.
