What computer equipment will I need?

  1. You can access online content on various devices but it is recommended that you have a PC/laptop with the following specifications

Minimum spec: Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, 8GB Ram, SSD drive, Windows 10

Recommended spec: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB Ram, 240GB SSD drive, Windows 10

Optional:

  • a webcam, either built in or separate to your device (not essential but helpful for getting to know your tutor and fellow students online)

  • a headset with microphone (although not essential is helpful in reducing interference in online video sessions

  • touchscreen with digital inking capability

If you are undertaking a course which requires you creating large video production projects, games design or using CAD software, you may benefit from a discrete graphics card and other kit such as a graphics tablet, your tutor should be able to advise if required.

Operating System: It is recommended that you use a device with Windows 10 operating system and ensure that you apply all updates that are available.

Internet Browser: It is recommended that you install Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on your device. You can dowload these for free from Google and Microsoft. (We would recommend using Google Chrome in the first instance if you will be using the Canvas VLE on your course).

Anti Virus protection: Please ensure your device has Anti-Virus protection installed with the latest updates applied.

Other Software: You should not need to purchase any software in order to complete your course (unless it is a specific requirement of your course and you have been informed of this by your tutor).

It is however helpful to be familiar with Office 365 and G-Suite (access is provided by the college using your college email account once you have enrolled. You do not need to purchase these. You can find further information about these on the My Apps and Digital Tools page.

Help, support and training using technology for your studies is available to you throughout your studies from your tutors, the IT Helpdesk and the Academic Services Team.

NB Please note that as part of your college account you will have free access to ample cloud-based file storage for the duration of your course, including Microsoft OneDrive as well as free access to Microsoft Office tools.

We recommend downloading and using Google Chrome as your web browser as it is compatible with our college systems.

Google Chrome Extensions

By using your college Google account you can add extra services - called extensions - to your Google Chrome toolbar.

Useful extensions include:

  • Grammarly

  • Read&Write for Google Chrome (useful for accessibility, writing and proofreading)

  • Texthelp Screenreader

  • Texthelp PDF Reader
