My name is James Bennett, I have always been a creative person and like to tell stories as well as having a hobbfy in 3D art already. For me game making offers a unique way to tell your stories in a way that the user can have various levels of agency in the outcome, allowing you to make games that can inspire others and if done correctly can have a lasting impact on people.
As for strengths I would say I can easily get invested in something and will do everything I can think of to get it done. I'm very creative and like to come up with random things just for fun, things like game ideas, short stories video idea but I've never had the skills to actually achieve any fully. I also enjoy helping people either with something they cant do or just listening to them if they need someone to talk to.
On the other hand I have a very low self esteem/poor self image and as such tend to me overcritical of any perceived mistakes or shortcomings, this tends to make me feel worthless and incapable of carrying things on at times. I also have a hard time in trusting people due to a bad past in doing so, this usually makes it hard to open up to others or to make the first contact with someone.
My personal favourite games over the years has to be Majora's mask and NiGHTS: Journey of dreams, they both have stories that focuses around similar themes. Majora's mask's theme is loss, grief and different ways to deal with it. The protagonist is looking for a lost friend and the antagonist is wanting to destroy everything because they feel abandoned. Where as NiGHTS: Journey of dreams is about two protagonist dreams, where they both meet the same character and go on a journey of self reflection and discovery. I strongly enjoy games that can invoke emotion or inspire others, I also enjoy games that require strategy or puzzle solving.
I have noticed in recent years a lot of games favour realistic/HD graphics over longer games with more experimental gimmicks, I would like to make some game that go against this by using cell shading and GameCube level of graphics but have longer more story focused games with maybe one or two gimmicks they focus on. I also noticed "retro games" have a pretty good audience and if done correctly, I think this is the audience I would want to focus on should i enter the game making scene.
I'm hoping that this course will give me a better understanding of the inner workings of blender and improve my art using it. I'm also somewhat interested in the application of unreal engine in future projects I have planned and to bring past projects into fruition. Although only a few of my ideas actually involve unreal engine most of them involve the use of blender, I'm still very interested in the use of both in future projects.
