Preliminary Credential Candidates can access multiple pathways to earn a preliminary credential at Dominican University that each include a support team.
PRELIMINARY CREDENTIAL PATHWAYS
Student Teaching Traditional Pathway: This is the traditional way to earn a credential. Student teachers are partnered with a credentialed teacher in a classroom setting who remains the Teacher of Record throughout the student teaching experience.
Intern Teachers: Intern teachers must meet strict prerequisites before obtaining an intern credential. Intern teachers are the Teacher of Record as they complete their credential program.
Emergency Permit Teachers: Districts may hire candidates using a Short-Term Staffing Permit (STSP) or a Provisional Internship Permit (PIP) if they are unable to hire a credentialed teacher. Candidates teaching with a PIP or STSP are the Teacher of Record as they complete their credential program.
All Preliminary Credential Candidates have a SUPPORT TEAM that includes the following:
A mentor teacher (for traditional student teachers) or a support teacher (for interns and permit teachers). The mentor teacher or support teacher provides daily oversight and a minimum of 5 hours per week of direct support on meeting the TPEs (during supervised teaching semester). Mentor/support teachers participate in the final evaluation of the credential candidate. Mentor/Support Teachers can also provide candidates with CalTPA support.
Mentor/Support Teachers model teaching & provide opportunities for candidates to teach foundational literacy skills and to practice diagnostic and early intervention techniques (see TPE 7). Note: Candidates are expected to take & pass a commission-approved literacy performance assessment that includes a focus on foundational literacy skills & the additional cross cutting themes in literacy.
Please read the Introduction Letter and see Professional Development Requirements.
University or Site-Based Supervisors can either be hired by the University or work at the school site. They are responsible for weekly observations during the Supervised Teaching Seminar. This should entail a minimum of 12 meetings & 10 formal observations. Supervisors also complete the practice lesson observation (preparation semester) and participate in the final evaluation of the credential candidate. Supervisors can also provide candidates with CalTPA support
Please read the Introduction Letter and complete the Initial Orientation to best support your candidates.
