Just a few years ago! DALOY, a completely new way to preserve organs for transplant. Bringing home a Gold Thesis Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis from the University and first place in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' (SME) Innovation Competition held last October 12, 2018, at the SMX Convention Center.
It is a device that prolongs the lifespan of donor livers for transplants by imitating the conditions of the human body, significantly extending the organ's preservation by double of traditional methods.
This thesis is by BS Manufacturing Engineering and Management (MEM) graduates namely, Madon Arcega (BS-MEM, ‘18), Tristan Limchesing (BS-MEM, ‘18), Joshua Manalili (BS-MEM, ‘18), Samantha Rice (BS-MEM, ‘18), and Marie Tuason (BS-MEM, ‘18), together with their research adviser and MEM Department Chair Dr. Nilo Bugtai.
Manufacturing Engineering and Management (MEM) alumni from batch 2012, Alyanna Arroyo, Katherine Marie de Asis, Andrei Duterte, William Lim Jr., Kevin Tuason, and former thesis adviser, Dr. Nilo Bugtai, bagged DLSU's second patent thanks to their thesis, Crab Claw Meat Extracting and Crab Shell Granulating Machine. As stated in the title, this machine extracts crab claw meat of what we know as the Alimasag as well as granulate its shell so that it can be used in other ways. It also serves as a efficient way to address the high demand of the crab meat industry especially in Western Visayas. This thesis bagged several awards such as Grand National Winner of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) - Magsaysay Future Engineer/Technologist Award and the National Grand Prize Award in the Philippine Association for Technological Education (PATE) Best Undergraduate Engineering Design Contest. The patent was awarded to the group last July 29, 2019 by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.
