Traci began her career in admissions in 2001 at Loyola University Chicago, where she was a former tour guide turned admission counselor. Over the last two decades, she has guided thousands of families through the college admission process. Traci spent 11 years in college admissions serving three unique institutions: Loyola University Chicago, Grand Valley State University, and Hawaii Pacific University. Traci spent 7 years as a College Counselor at Loyola Academy, and is now in her fifth year at Deerfield High School.


Traci also serves as an application reader for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s scholarships are available to high achieving seniors with financial need who seek to attend the nation's best four-year colleges. The selection process for Cooke Scholarships is multi-layered and competitive with approximately 50 scholarships awarded each year from thousands of applicants.


Traci is a member of the Illinois Association of College Admission Counseling and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Traci has also served as a NACAC delegate for 3 years for the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling Executive Board. Traci has been a member of IACAC for 22 years and has been awarded the Molly K. Arnold President’s Service Award, and the Inclusion, Access, and Success Award.  Traci has visited over 200 colleges and has served on counselor advisory boards for The University of Arizona, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Loyola University New Orleans. Traci is a frequent presenter at higher education conferences, counselor workshops, and school seminars.

Kim began her career at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest as a Registrar for 2 years, and then was a Counselor, College Counselor, and Wellness Coordinator at James B. Conant High School in Hoffman Estates for 10 years. She is in her ninth year at Deerfield High School. Kim is a National Board Certified Counselor. She visits 10-20 colleges every year totaling over 200 colleges during her career. Kim has served on counselor advisory boards for The Ohio State University and Lake Forest College. Kim is a presenter about various college admissions topics at conferences every year.


Kim is a member of the Illinois Association of College Admission Counseling and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. She has served as a NACAC delegate for 3 years and was elected the Chief Delegate to represent the state of Illinois in her last year as a delegate. She created a committee for IACAC called Professional Connections linking organizations across the state to collaborate, educating graduate programs in School Counseling and Higher Ed to IACAC resources and an understanding of college counseling, and maintaining the Speakers Bureau connecting high school counselors to college representatives to present to their students and families. She created the Counselor Challenge to help support under-resourced counselors throughout the state to get connected to networks, IACAC events, and have a mentor within the profession. Kim also won the Molly K. Arnold President’s Service award for IACAC. 


As a former 2-sport collegiate athlete in Basketball and Softball, and Basketball coach of Glenbrook North Feeder, Conant High School, and Lake Forest College, Kim possesses knowledge about both the recruitment process and playing sports at the college level.

Karen Pedersen earned a Bachelor of Science in Child Development, Early & Elementary Education at Michigan State University. She earned a Master of Science in School and Professional Counseling at Concordia University Chicago. She also earned a Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership from National-Louis University. Mrs. Pedersen started her career in elementary education, teaching grade K-3 and recently retired from Lake Forest Schools, where she served as an Academic Counselor (2002-2009) and a Middle School Family & Consumer Sciences teacher (2009-2023). She was the Creative Arts Team Leader (2009-2023) and served on the Building Leadership Committee (2002-2023).

Maia Learning

Deerfield High School uses a program called MaiaLearning. MaiaLearning is a college and career readiness platform that engages students to find career passions, which leads to college major exploration and choosing college matches. Students are able to complete interest and learning style inventories, use college scattergrams to assess the likelihood of acceptance, keep track of their college lists and more.

From the Maia log in page, click on the Sign In with Google button. If you have multiple accounts logged in on your computer, a pop-up screen will appear. Select your DHS gmail account. You will be directed to the Maia homepage which is referred to as your Dashboard.
