Dr. Ruth Simmons is noted for being the first African American to hold the position of president at several universities, as well as, many administrative roles. Dr. Simmons is the first African Ameri-can president of Smith College. While at Smith, she initiated the first engineering program at an American women’s college. She is the 18th president of Brown University, and the first African American to the position of president at an Ivy League Institution.
