The realization of the Dillard University Nursing Program came about due to the lack of premier nursing education programs between Texas and Georgia. Dr. Albert W. Dent, Superintendent of Flint-Goodridge Hospital and Dillard University President expressed these concerns. In 1942, Dr. Dent instated Rita Miller to develop a nursing education program that would produce well-prepared graduates, capable of immediate service. Under her direction, Dillard University would empower generations of African American women to positively affect the field of medicine.
