Stephen visited Brazil last week to announce the launch of 99Food and our substantial investment in the Brazilian market. In a meeting on April 16 with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Stephen committed to investing one billion reais (approximately US$170 million) in the country within 2025. The 99Food service is in intensive preparation and expected to launch by mid-year.
Vice President Alckmin welcomed DiDi and 99. Alckmin noted that "DiDi and 99's increased commitment to Brazil helps support our government's promise to maintain economic stability, particularly against the backdrop of global uncertainty." He also emphasized that 99Food would benefit multiple stakeholders across Brazilโs society, including delivery workers and restaurant owners, while promoting development in a variety of industries.๐ฃ
In his remarks, Stephen stated, "this investment reflects our long-term commitment to Brazil. We're bringing together all the experience we've built across the 14 countries we operate in โ with millions of rides and deliveries every day โ to give Brazilians lower prices, better options, and a more reliable experience across all our services. This is more than food delivery โ it's about shaping the future of convenience in Brazil."
Currently, 99 serves 50 million users across Brazil, with services covering more than 3,300 cities and towns. The platform has registered over 1.5 million drivers and couriers, including approximately 700,000 motorcycle couriers providing delivery and transportation services. DiDi fully acquired the Brazilian 99 mobility platform in 2018, with 99 retaining its brand and operating independently in Brazil, becoming a household name in the country.
The announcement of 99Food has generated significant media interest. The announcement received coverage in nearly 350 articles within 24 hours, including an exclusive interview with Folha de S. Paulo, one of Brazil's most prestigious newspapers.
During his visit, Stephen also met with members of the new 99Food team. Together, they celebrated the opportunity to continue serving over 50 million Brazilian users by expanding services to make everyday life better. DiDi and 99 are working together to make life simpler, more affordable, and more efficient for Brazilians through our expanding suite of services.
