I grew up living in a nipa hut, a shelter to the whole family. Every time it was damaged because of a typhoon, my father used to change the damaged one either with bamboo or nipa palm. It continued through the years never thinking that the nipa has been part of our life, never thanking the comforts that it has given to our family. The color symbolizes our emotional encounters during the years while living in it.
And then I became a medical worker at a hospital in Germany for 25 years. During these years I used to provide vitamins for my father. My father asked for more vitamins. I sent more vitamins than he needed for a month. I thought he was giving some to our relatives. To my surprise, when I spent a vacation with my family, I saw my father feeding his roosters with the vitamins I sent to him. I saw from his face the happiness while he was doing it.
The nipa hut is visible but I have never seen the importance that it brought to our lives, that is why I am painting it to make it visible.
I colored my canvas with my experiences in life. This is Filipinism which makes my art Filipino, my identity.
