Leather has long been valued for its exceptional durability, timeless appeal, and remarkable versatility, making it one of the most enduring materials in fine craftsmanship. In the Philippines, skilled artisans transform premium leather into beautifully crafted bags, shoes, jackets, wallets, and other heirloom-quality pieces that balance function with elegance.
According to the leather goods blog LeatherCollection, Philippine leather craftsmanship grew out of a close exchange between the leather tanneries of Mecauayan, Bulacan and the legendary Marikina shoe industry. At its height in the 1970s, Meycauayan had over 100 tanneries operating in dedicated zones, processing up to two tons of raw skins every day. During this time, Marikina’s artisans, using Bulacan-tanned leather, produced 70% of all shoes worn in the Philippines.
Despite its decline, the Philippine leather goods market commanded an estimated valuation of 3.99 Billion USD in 2024, driven by an international demand for sustainable, heirloom-quality executive pieces.
