If you go to Caño Cristales, we recommend you the following activities:

1

It is important to bring a reusable bottle with you so you can charge your own water because it’s not allowed to have plastic bottles in the national park.

2

To protect the river and the plants, it is not allowed to use repellent and sunscreen. That’s why it’s important to use the correct clothes to protect your skin, like long sleeve shirts and trousers. You can only put sunscreen before entering the park ONLY if you don't go into the water.

3

Bring the correct type of shoes with you: waterproof and preferably hiking shoes with a good grip, because sometimes you have to walk into the river and it can be slippery.

4

Local people are always ready to help you with whatever you need. That’s the beauty of its people in La Macarena.

5

Don't miss the parrando llanero, a cultural showcase of local culture

6

Be prepared for the weather to change; you could be suffering from heat and suddenly it starts raining.

7

Ideal if you can carry a waterproof camera, the underwater shots are amazing!

8

Life in La Macarena is simple, but nice and authentic.

9

You cannot visit the red river without a licensed guide. Most tours last three to four days and take in a variety of sights.

10

There’s a lot more to a Caño Cristales tour than just the river. The river itself is located alongside the huge La Macarena National Park, which is a vast area home to savannah, incredible rock formations, jungles and bird and mammal watching.

Without any doubts, we still have a long way to discover all the hidden gems of this beautiful region.
