This professional development session is designed to explore how feedback can be provided asynchronously.

Both synchronous and asynchronous feedback have a place in the classroom. In the hybrid classroom, this provides opportunities to provide feedback "just in time" and feedback that can be reflected and acted upon at the student's own pace.

What is asynchronous feedback?

Asynchronous means “not occurring at the same time”. The word became popular during remote learning and suggested that students and teachers could be working at different times to suit their own situations.

Why is asynchronous feedback important?

Asynchronous feedback has many advantages: students can check on feedback at a time and place which suits them, making the learning more personalised. They are able to take as much time as they need to absorb and respond to the feedback.

There are also advantages for the teacher, who may choose to leave feedback or assess work at times outside of usual school structures. Asynchronous feedback can be incredibly flexible.

Three methods for asynchronous feedback

Using Mote for audio feedback

Mote can reduce the time it takes to provide feedback, and is also a valuable way to provide asynchronous feedback that students can access at any time

Using Docs + Keep for asynchronous feedback

Google Docs has lots of features designed for collaboration, many of which can be used to extend and enhance feedback.

Keep is a tool for note taking and creating to-do lists. It is integrated with Google Docs and can be used by students to break teacher feedback down into a list of actions.

As the teacher, you might use comments on a Google Doc to provide feedback and suggestions. This is a great way to leave asynchronous feedback for the student to read and review later.

To take this to the next level, encourage your students to turn your comments into a list of actions in Keep.

Using YouTube + Docs for video feedback

When you need to give more robust feedback, the best way is often to explain face-to-face. However, it’s not always possible to find the time or the place to give lengthy verbal feedback.

Video feedback - such as a recorded screencast or a video filmed with your phone or webcam - can be a great way to provide asynchronous feedback to students. It gives you the time and the space to craft your feedback, and students will be able to pause, rewind, and replay to make sure they have taken everything on board.

You can use YouTube in combination with Google Docs to provide excellent asynchronous feedback.

Google Docs is a common tool for students to demonstrate their work, from essays to larger projects. If you need to provide extensive feedback on a Doc, consider recording your feedback and embedding the video directly into the Doc.

Record your video feedback either as a screencast or a camera recording. Upload it to your YouTube channel, and paste the link into the Doc.

The student can even preview the video from right there in the Doc itself.
