Lesson Outline

These lessons explore how the people involved in a student's education journey might change from traditional groups to a whole ecosystem. In traditional educational models knowledge is held and shared in institutions like schools and universities. The people involved in this traditional system might include teachers, principals, and ancillary staff. However, we also know that in a hybrid learning setting students have access to a much broader ecosystem. Learners can access knowledge in many forms and from many different people in their communities.

People in your school

In a traditional education setting, the people in your school are a primary source of knowledge. Schools are made up of many groups of people from teachers to support staff and administrative staff, and of course students.

In this lesson you will create a character map of different people in your school and explore how those people impact your development.

You will then reflect on your connections hexagons and answer a few questions about your school community.

Discussion: the people at our school

With a partner, discuss all of the people in your school from students to teachers, support staff, and other members of the school community.

List as many people as you can think of. You may wish to split them into categories (such as staff, students, etc.)

In the following activity you will be asked to “map” these people and group them together based on how they connect and interact in your school.

Hexagons activity

Use hexagons to represent the kinds of connections in your school. Different colours could be used to represent groups and individuals. Hexagons can be connected, moved apart, or linked together using arrows and connectors. You might wish to explain some of your connections with text boxes.

Think, pair, share

Work with someone else in the class - not your partner from the earlier discussion. Compare your connections map. How does your map differ from your partners? How is it the same?

Discuss your maps as a class and then move on to the final reflections.

Reflection

Look closely at your connections hexagons. Think particularly about the separations and groupings of the different people in your school community. Answer the following reflection prompts:

Which groups are the closest? What makes these connections so strong?
Which groups are the furthest apart? What could be done to bring them closer together?
Are there any groups or people who are not connected at all to the rest of the school community? What could the school do about that?
