PROJECT PATICHEM: ITS EFFECTS ON THE ACADEMIC MOTIVATION
AND PERFORMANCE OF STEM 11 STUDENTS IN LEARNING MOLECULAR GEOMETRY
JERRYPOL C. PALMA, Teacher III, Quezon National High School
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effects of Project PATIChem (Performance Amelioration through Technology-infused Instruction in teaching Chemistry) in improving academic motivation and performance in the study of molecular chemistry. Project PATIChem featured an Android application, developed by the researcher, which incorporated interactive elements such as quizzes, course presentations, image hotspots, drag-and-drop activities, and molecular geometry and polarity simulations. Moreover, traditional molecular model kits were used in the teaching process. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two sections of the STEM strand at Quezon National High School during the 2022-2023 school year. The data analysis involved various statistical methods, including independent samples t-tests to compare mean scores, mean and standard deviation, Cohen’s d was utilized to measure the effect size, and Spearman’s Rank Correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between academic performance and motivation when using Project PATIChem. The research findings revealed that the experimental group, with the utilization of Project PATIChem, achieved outstanding mean scores, better than the control group, which used traditional methods and attained very satisfactory mean scores. Project PATIChem had a significant positive effect on students' academic motivation, leading to improved performance. Project PATIChem is strongly recommended for teaching molecular geometry, as it enhances student performance and motivation. Additionally, integrating Project PATIChem-reinforced instruction as a supplement in teaching Chemistry can aid students in grasping challenging concepts.
