ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Reading Comprehension Learning Laboratory (ReCoLLab) in improving the reading comprehension skills of Grade 6 pupils at San Roque Elementary School during the 2022–2023 school year. The research responded to the national concern over declining literacy rates, supported by data from the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI). A one-group pre-test and post-test experimental design was employed, using validated assessment tools based on the Phil-IRI framework. The ReCoLLab intervention included structured reading sessions using Department of Education (DepEd)-approved materials. Each student engaged with personalized workbooks within the learning lab, enabling consistent tracking of progress. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including mean, standard deviation, paired-samples t-test, and Cohen’s d, were used to assess the intervention’s impact. The findings showed a significant improvement in reading comprehension scores, rising from a mean of 7.87 (Very Low Level) in the pre-test to 13.60 (Above Average Level) in the post-test, with a mean gain of 5.73. A lower standard deviation in post-test scores reflected greater consistency among pupils. The t-test results (t = 16.13, p < 0.05) confirmed that the score increase was statistically significant, and the large Cohen’s d value (2.35) indicated a strong effect. The study concludes that ReCoLLab is an effective strategy for enhancing reading comprehension among elementary learners. It recommends institutionalizing such interventions and continuously refining them through expert input and the integration of engaging, contextualized learning tools.
