Project SIM (Strengthening the Innovative Material): A Teacher-Made Intervention for Home-Based Learning
Hazel Joy V. Julian, Teacher III, Roxas National High School
ABSTRACT
Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) is an educational material for remedial purposes and one of the strategies Roxas National High School used in this study as an intervention. Specifically, the study was conducted to test the effectiveness of Project SIM in improving one of the least mastered competency “Explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and other molecules to and from the different parts of the body” in Science 9. A two-group pre- and post-test quasi-experimental research design was conducted with sixty (60) Grade 9 students at Roxas National High School as respondents employing the purposive sampling technique. There were two groups of participants: the experimental group, which utilized the intervention material, and the control group, which used the SLMs/LAS. The statistical tools used were the mean, standard deviation, paired t-test, independent t-test, and Cohen’s d. Based on the analysis, there was a significant difference between the students’ pre-test and post-test scores and the intervention had a large effect on the respondents’ test scores. This result implies that using Project SIM is an effective intervention material in boosting the science competency of Grade 9 students at Roxas National High School. From the findings and conclusion, the researcher recommends using SIM as educational material for remedial purposes, crafting other SIMs based on the least mastered competency, and conducting similar studies to improve performance.
