Reading Comprehension and Practices in English: An Index On Improving Reading Performance of The Grades 4 To 6 Pupils of Daramuangan Norte Elementary School

ABSTRACT
Improving students’ reading comprehension is a crucial task that most teachers and learners find challenging. Hence, this study was conducted on the 60 grades 4 to 6 pupils of Daramuangan Norte Elementary School from August to December 2019, employing the purposive sampling technique. This study aimed to describe their reading performance in English, including their understanding of vocabularies and the text they are reading. The researcher used the descriptive-correlational design that assessed the respondents’ reading performance in English and their practices in understanding vocabularies and text. Results reveal that the respondents are not practicing the correct processes in understanding vocabularies and text, making them have poor reading comprehension in English. Furthermore, the relationship between the respondents’ performance in English reading and their practices in understanding vocabularies and text is not significant because the respondents do not have good reading practices. An intervention should be crafted to improve the vocabulary skills of the learners so that eventually, their understanding of the text will also improve. Moreover, the processes in understanding vocabulary and text should be practiced by the pupils to develop the reading habit.
