USING THE REMEDIAL READING TOOL (RRT) TO IMPORVE THE READING LEVEL OPF THE GRADE 5 FRUSTRATION LEARNERS
Abstract:
This study was conducted to utilize Remedial Reading Tool (RRT) in improving the reading level of Grade 5 frustration learners of section MMP of Magtaking Elementary School, San Carlos City, Pangasinan for the SY 2019-2020. It employed the experimental design method of research. The researcher selected 2 sections with 30 learners. The researcher employed fish bowl technique for random sampling to determine which 2 sections were used in the study. Sections Grade 5 – MMP and Grade 5 – JCP were chosen after the random sampling. The researcher assigned Grade 5 – JCP as the control group and Grade 5 – MMP as the experimental group. The Control group were not exposed to any intervention while the experimental group utilized the Remedial Reading Tool as intervention. The study utilized the result of the classroom-based Phil-IRI as the instrument for gathering data. It found that the level of reading difficulties of the experimental group in word recognition and comprehension skills improves after the intervention. The same finding also implies to the control group, their reading difficulties improved but slightly lower than that of experimental group. It appears that Remedial Reading Tool (RRT) contributed much on the improvement of learners reading difficulties. It was recommended that in order to improve the reading level of frustration learners, there is a need to adopt and utilize a Remedial Reading Tool (RRT) to cater the needs of struggling readers who need to build necessary skills to reach a proficient level in reading.
Abstract:
There is a strong connection between vocabulary and reading comprehension. It was also reported that poor reading comprehension is interlinked to the learners’ performance in all subject areas. The present study wanted to improve the mathematical word-problem solving skills of the grade 6 learners through improving the learners’ vocabulary and reading comprehension through Vocabulary Word Cards. There were thirty-two (32) grade 6 learners who took part in the study. The learners were randomly assigned to experimental and control group. In the pre-test, it was revealed that the learners both in experimental and control group performed low in mathematical wordproblem solving skills. To improve their mathematical word-problem solving skills intervention took place. Posttest was administered to both group after the intervention to determine if there is an improvement in the learners’ mathematical word-problem solving skills. The present study revealed that learners under experimental group performed better than the learners under control group. Using t-test @ 0.05 level of significance it was discovered that learners under control group or the group taught through talk and chalk has a slight difference in their mathematical word-problem solving skills. On the contrary there is a significant difference in the respondents’ mathematical word-problem solving skills before and after the intervention. Keywords: mathematical problem-solving skill, grade 6 learners, Vocabulary Word Cards (VWC)
