IE is appropriate for the Proficiency Scale Indicator.
“At this time, there is not enough evidence to assess [Student Name]’s learning, and we are unable to assess at this time. I look forward to getting to know [Student Name]”
From the Delta Secondary Reporting Guidelines, written by Brooke Moore (anything in yellow needs to be changed by the teacher for each individual student):
“Due to (Student Name)’s extended absence(s), there is insufficient evidence (IE) of (Student Name)’s learning from which to base an accurate judgement as to their progress in the course. (Teacher needs to detail a plan for supporting this student’s progress by describing next steps which could include consultation with the family, specific strategies to implement, supports that will be offered, and learning to demonstrate). Parents/guardians/caregivers, please reach out to confirm your understanding of this plan and to discuss ideas you may have about how to best support (Student Name) in their learning.”
A less teacher-jargon-y comment in the case of IE:
“Due to an extended absence, there is insufficient evidence to assess (Student Name)’s learning at this time. Please reach out to discuss ideas on how to best support (Student Name) in their learning when they return to school. I look forward to working with (Student Name).”
When the student returns and it is the next reporting period, talk about the challenges the student has had with the transition back to class.
Assess them based on the Proficiency Scale on the Learning Standards they demonstrate in your class. Please also work with your ITT teacher to determine what is appropriate to write for a comment for this student.
You can use this comment:
“[Student Name] was able to demonstrate a (beginning/developing) understanding of ___. Key supports provided to [Student Name] this term are noted in the [IEP /Student Learning Plan]”
Please work with your ITT teacher to determine what is appropriate to write for a comment for this student. The proficiency scale indicator assigned should be in relation to their Replacement Curriculum Goals.
Please follow guidelines from you International Coordinator, from the International Education Department.
Please work with your LST teacher to determine what is appropriate to write for a comment for this student.
You can use this comment:
“At this point, [Student name] is at the early stages of learning English and is not receiving a mark for this subject. In class, [Student name] is able to _____. Moving forward, [Student name] is encouraged to actively participate in conversations and class work. This focus reflects [Student name]’s AIP and will support both English and class content learning.”
Follow conventional guidelines for report card comments. You can also include the following comment:
“ (Student Name) was able to demonstrate a (beginning/developing) understanding of ___ after being provided opportunities to also review the content in their primary home language.”
