First and foremost, prioritizing the social, emotional and mental needs of families is paramount as we create a foundation for learning moving forward.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (CASEL, 2013).
A meta-analysis of 213 programs, primarily covering three decades of research, found that social and emotional learning interventions increased students' academic performance by 11 percentile points (Durlak et al., 2011), reduced aggression and emotional distress among students, increased helping behaviors in school, and improved positive attitudes toward self and others (Durlak et al., 2011).
